Stub End is a type of pipe fitting used in conjunction with Lap Joint Flanges (LJF) to enable easy disassembly and alignment of piping systems, especially where frequent dismantling is required or when using expensive materials like stainless steel, nickel alloys, or exotic metals. The stub end forms the sealed connection with the flange, while the backing flange can be made of a more economical material.
Typically used in corrosive environments, stub ends help reduce total system cost. For instance, when connecting stainless steel pipework, only the stub end needs to be stainless steel—the backing flange can be carbon steel. This makes it highly economical for chemical plants, water treatment facilities, offshore platforms, and food-grade process lines.
Stub Ends are manufactured in two common types: Type A and Type B, as per ASME B16.9 and MSS-SP-43 standards. Type A is used with standard Lap Joint Flanges, while Type B is used with slip-on flanges in light-duty applications. Stub ends can be long pattern (used for standard flanges) or short pattern (for MSS-type flanges) and are typically butt-welded to the pipe. click here for pipes
